Sounds almost like double bloatware from this iThingie user. Both Google stuff I don't use and MS stuff I don't use. Will it be a Double Differentiator? Or just less usable space in a smartphone? Maybe I just don't get it. Nah!

After much thoughts about this new machine, I am leaning in a different direction than my last entry. Just maybe the Great Re-Iterator in the Sky is going to morph out a 12" iPad Pro with attached or not attached keyboard. Almost all of what I use either my desktop or my iPad or my iPhone is to do the job of no more horsepower than the iPhone. But, a few times a week I need the precision of the desktop to get my exact jobs done. A keyboarded iPad with a touch or mouse available would be my ultimate machine. The sky iWork's apps will suffice for precision. So that's my wish list item for 2015

My question is why Apple doesn't want to increase RAM storage. Their 64-bit processors obviously can handle more RAM. Do they have a good reason not to? They certainly can AFFORD to put more RAM in the iPhone. Do they use a type of RAM that Android devices don't use? Possibly a costlier RAM that's slightly faster? Apple designs their own processors and codes their own OS. One would think Apple knows what it is doing better than the average griping tech-head. Why would Apple deliberately handicap the hardware if lots of consumers were complaining about some effects of low RAM? They're obviously not trying to obsolete their hardware faster because each model is passed down about two years as less expensive iPhones.

My only guess is Apple has not found it to be much of a problem and that there aren't enough consumers moaning about low RAM conditions. I'd love to hear Apple's explanation. I'm sure even a decent explanation wouldn't stop the griping. If a user feels they're being cheated out of something then there's probably no way to placate them. For all we know Apple tested iPhone prototypes with more RAM and didn't see enough of a difference to justify the added cost.

I fully agree with your general point, but the particular example you chose is one which directly impacts on user experience.

The lack of ram on iOS means that browser tabs constantly have to reload. And this is one of those cases where it's often non-techy people who really suffer, because they don't understand why the web form they spent 10 minutes filling in was lost when they briefly checked something in another app.

You've hit the nail on the head Ian. The fact that the iPhone 6 blows virtually all Android devices out of the water in real-world multi-tasking speed, 3D game frames per second and web browsing performance benchmarks is completely glossed over by these spec-obsessed Android fans.

If I, as a recording artist (Fat Chance Dept), got an advance on writing or recording a song for Publisher XYZ, then my subsequent royalties get offset against that advance, true. I get nothing additional! while the advance is paid off. Am I in debt? Not really; the publisher took a chance in extending that advance, and I voluntarily took it; if subsequent sales (all forms) didn't cover the advance, I at least was able to take, and spend, the advance.
